Mark Cosgrove’s best T20 score for Leicestershire help keep their NatWest T20 Blast campaign alive with a commanding 48-run win over champions Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.Cosgrove’s 76 from 48 balls helped Leicestershire make 193 for 5 – their highest total in the fixture – and it was easily defended with only Adam Rossington showing for Northants with a season’s-best 67 in 46 balls.Northants failed to seal a quarter-final spot and will now need to beat Yorkshire at Headingley or Durham at home to reach the last eight.They were well beaten here and Cosgrove and Luke Ronchi did the damage. The pair shared 72 for the second wicket before Cosgrove accelerated in the final half of the innings. He struck two sixes swung down the ground off Saif Zaib’s left-arm spin and another over midwicket from Azharullah in passing fifty in 32 balls and threatened to steer Leicestershire over 200.They fell marginally short as Cosgrove was run out trying to keep the strike in the final over. An earlier run out chance to Steven Crook at midwicket when Cosgrove had just 3 was a moment Northants were left to rue.Cosgrove finished the work began by Ronchi, who got the innings underway with a well-timed flick over midwicket for six and jammed out a yorker to fine leg to take 12 from the first over. He found another boundary to the final ball of the Powerplay that brought 58 runs.Cameron Delport also played his part with 26 in 15 balls. He punched Rory Kleinveldt for his first boundary over mid-on and then lifted two sixes over square leg and midwicket as 17 came from the fourth over of the innings. But trying to swing Ben Sanderson’s first ball down the ground, was splendidly caught by Rob Keogh running back from point, taking a whirl of a top edge over his shoulder. But it was the only wicket Northants took until the 13th over.Outside the Powerplay, Ronchi whipped his hands to lift Crook’s first ball over deep square leg on his way to fifty in 30 balls and struck a third six over long-off as Keogh proved expensive, three overs for 30, as Leicestershire built an excellent platform at 117 for 1 after 12 overs.Ronchi eventually fell trying to heave a Sanderson slower ball over midwicket and only found Crook running in from the fence. His 59 from 36 balls was his second half-century in the competition this year and helped set a target far beyond the reach of Northants.The chase was knifed inside the first three overs as two cheap wickets fell – Richard Levi for just 12 top-edging a sweep off Callum Parkinson to deep midwicket and Ben Duckett lbw to Clint McKay for just 1. Rossington tried to stem the bleeding with his best effort of the season to ignite the chase, stepping to leg to take boundaries over the off-side with the field up and then sweeping Parkinson.Rossington’s 31-ball fifty momemtarily patched up the early wound as he and Alex Wakely added 85 for the third wicket to leave the home side in touch at 87 for 2 after 10 overs. But Delport’s crafty seamers – he finished with 3 for 19 from his four overs – proved a turning point. With the required rate climbing over 11-an-over, first Wakely holed out to midwicket for 20 and then Rossington to long-on. The damage to Northants chase proved terminal.
Aston Villa are plotting a summer move to sign free agent Adama Traore, according to fresh reports.
Where is Adama Traore now?
The right-winger was most recently at Wolverhampton Wanderers where he made a total of 194 appearances, but with his deal there having expired which saw him depart on July 1, he is now technically able to speak to other clubs, and the Old Gold's sporting director Matt Hobbs has delivered an update on his future. He said:
“As the manager said in his press conferences recently, Adama is a player we’d like to keep and we’re still talking to him. He’s now out of contract, but it doesn’t mean there’s not an opportunity to still come to an agreement, so conversations will be ongoing. He’s probably earned the right to understand what else is out there.”

The Spaniard will already be familiar with life across the Midlands having had a one-year spell with Unai Emery’s side from 2015-16, which despite being a period of time that didn’t work out as a result of him leaving after a single season, his name is once again being brought onto the radar of chiefs at Villa Park.

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are “plotting a surprise move” for Traore ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. The Gestifute client, who has the versatility to operate in seven different positions over the grass, last season ranked in the 93rd percentile for successful take-ons and recorded 81 crosses which was more than any other of his teammates, via FBRef, highlighting his ability to dribble past his marker and whip balls into the box for his strikers.
Spain’s eight-cap international also has a decent record against Villa, having secured four victories and registering one assist when part of the opposition’s team, so if he can perform well for the away side, imagine what he’d be capable of under the guidance of Emery.
Villa recently secured the signing of Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen who is also a right-winger, but this doesn't seem to have stopped the hierarchy from looking at a deal for Traore, so should he put pen to paper, the boss will have two new solid options to choose from on that side of the flank next season.
Nottingham Forest are in “advanced talks” to bring AS Monaco defender Ismail Jakobs to the Premier League, according to reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano.
Who is Ismail Jakobs?
Jakobs is naturally a left-back who has played his football at the Stade Louis-II for the past two years having moved there from FC Koln back in 2021, but having fallen significantly out of favour under Adi Hutter, it’s highly likely that he will be heading for the exit door before transfer deadline day on September 1.
The Senegal international, who represented his nation at the 2022 World Cup, was only handed nine starts last season in Ligue 1 and was forced to sit on the bench for the majority of the campaign having been introduced as a substitute on 23 occasions, highlighting how far down he is in his manager’s pecking order.
Despite his contract still having another three years remaining, the 23-year-old is therefore expected to want to move onto new pastures and join a club where he knows that he’s wanted and will get regular minutes under his belt, a potential destination being The City Ground.
Steve Cooper will have to enter the market for a player in his target’s position with Renan Lodi returning to Atletico Madrid to join Marseille on a permanent deal following his temporary spell in the top-flight, and if the following update is to be believed, it sounds like the boss is close to securing the services of the overseas starlet.

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that Nottingham Forest are in positive ongoing discussions with AS Monaco regarding a permanent deal for Jakobs who is excited by the project being presented to him in the Midlands. He wrote:
“Understand Nottingham Forest are now in advanced talks to sign Ismail Jakobs as new left back. Player keen on the move, negotiations advancing on clubs side with AS Monaco to reach an agreement soon.”

According to journalist Josh Bunting, Jakobs is a “joy to watch” at AS Monaco and whilst he’s naturally a left-back in the heart of the defence, he’s much more of a threat in attack when bursting down the flank, so should he put pen to paper, he would be a hugely exciting addition at Nottingham Forest.
The Cologne native, who pockets £10k-per-week, last season ranked in the 99th percentile amongst full-backs for attacking touches in the opposition’s penalty area and whipped a total of 61 crosses into the box which was the fourth-highest tally throughout his squad, via FBRef, highlighting his desire to create chances for his teammates and get involved with the action in the final third.
The French outfit’s left-footed gem, who has provided 15 assists and scored ten goals throughout his career, would also provide the boss with excellent versatility with his ability to operate in five different positions on both the left and right flanks, so it would be a massive coup for the club if they are successfully able to land Jakobs’ signature in the coming weeks.

Half-centuries by Jacques Rudolph and Aneurin Donald coupled with a frugal two-over stint of 1 for 12 by Craig Meschede helped Glamorgan extend their leadership of the NatWest T20 Blast South Group with an emphatic 25-run win over Kent.Rudolph’s captain’s knock of 77 not out from 52 balls saw Glamorgan post 199 for 2 on an excellent Canterbury pitch – a pursuit that proved too tough for Kent despite Joe Denly’s 68 as the hosts fell well short with a 20-over total of 174 for 4.Looking for their fourth South Group win, Kent’s chase started with panache when Denly straight drove Michael Hogan’s fourth delivery for a straight six. At the other end Daniel Bell-Drummond went for 3, dragging the ball on to middle stump in attempting to cut Lukas Carey’s third delivery of the afternoon to bring in Kent skipper Sam Northeast with only 21 on the board.Denly hit the ropes three times as Graham Wagg’s first over of left-arm seam went for 13 to move past the 300-run milestone in this year’s Blast, yet Kent were still 10 behind the visitors come the end of the Powerplay.Northeast upped the tempo with a swept six against Colin Ingram’s wrist spin and, with spin at both ends, Denly repeated the dose against Andrew Salter to keep Kent ticking at eight-an-over. Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be showing a strong interest in Rosario Central star, Alejo Veliz, with the Lilywhites seemingly casting a wide net in their bid to find a replacement for Harry Kane.
How much would Alejo Veliz cost?
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the north London outfit have already made an approach to sign the 19-year-old striker, with negotiations said to be underway regarding the prospect of bringing the young Argentine to N17.
Writing on Twitter, the transfer insider revealed: "Tottenham have approached Rosario Central for 2003 born talented striker Alejo Véliz. Talks are ongoing. There’s no agreement in place between all parties but negotiations are concrete, as @CLMerlo reported.

While Romano did not state the kind of fee that would be needed for chairman Daniel Levy to be able to prise the teenager from his homeland, separate reports have indicated that the 6 foot 1 ace could have a price tag of around $15m (£12m).
The transfer guru also went on to reveal that personal terms have been agreed with Veliz, albeit with Rosario hoping to keep the player at the club on loan for the foreseeable future.

With the aforementioned Kane seemingly on his way to Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou will have to find a way to try and ease the loss of the England skipper, with the 30-year-old having been a shining light last season after netting 30 Premier League goals.
While unlikely to be an immediate, direct replacement for the long-serving talisman due to his relative youth, Veliz could well emerge as a real superstar in the years to come, having been hailed as the "complete forward" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.
The Argentina U20 international boasts a solid record thus far of 19 goals in 62 appearances in all competitions for his current side, although he has particularly come alive in 2023, having netted 11 times in just 23 league appearances in the current campaign.

A figure noted for his "finishing" and "instinct" by Kulig, Veliz may well be hoping to replicate the impact that his compatriot, Sergio Aguero enjoyed in English football, with the now-retired ace having established himself as a truly lethal and clinical presence during his time at Manchester City.
While at just 5 foot 8 Aguero offered less of a physical presence in attack than his fellow Argentine, the 35-year-old was also a real machine in front of goal in his pomp, having scored 184 league goals in his ten-year stint at the Etihad – a record that places him fourth on the all-time list in the competition.
Despite having joined City from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in 2011, the Buenos Aires native did also begin his career in his homeland, like Veliz, having enjoyed a similar record after scoring 23 goals in 56 outings for Independiente.
Such was his later success for the Cityzens, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand dubbed the prolific poacher as the "hardest" opponent of his career, having notably praised the one-time Barcelona man for his "fantastic movement".
That trait appears to be shared by young Veliz with Kulig having also noted the marksman's "movement" as one of his key strengths, ensuring he could emulate Aguero by proving a real handful for Premier League defenders over the coming years.
With Levy currently facing the prospect of losing Kane before the September deadline, to be able to acquire an Aguero-esque figure to help fill the void could be a dream scenario.

Kieron Pollard has denied he deliberately bowled the no-ball that potentially cost Evin Lewis a record-breaking hundred in St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ 10-wicket win over Barbados Trident at the Caribbean Premier League.Lewis was on 97 off 31 balls when he took strike with the scores level, a boundary away from the fastest hundred in CPL history and the second fastest in all T20 cricket. But Pollard overstepped the line by a big margin, Patriots had the one more run they needed for victory, and Lewis could not have a crack at the record.Pollard, the Tridents captain, said he overstepped as he was trying to put extra effort into a short ball, his best delivery option. “When I took up that ball in that last delivery, I had one thing in my mind: trying to bowl a delivery, my best delivery – what has been working for me throughout the tournament – a short delivery to see if he [will] have a waft at it, to see if it can go up in the air and we can get him out,” Pollard told Sports Max.”Although we would have lost the game, I was still thinking of getting him out, and using my strength, what I had been doing. Unfortunately, [the] stride went for that extra, I stepped over the mark and I think that has been the talking point, of what actually happened, the actual no-ball itself.”It wasn’t intentional, nothing was intentional at any point in time. I acknowledge that we have lost the game but I am not going to just go there and bowl a ball just for him to hit it for six or four, for him to score hundred in that sense. That’s not my nature, and I don’t think any sportsman will just do something to that effect.”This isn’t the first time that Pollard’s on-field actions have been questioned. In the IPL, he was once ruled to have run one short in a bid to retain strike, and the sportsmanship of that was questioned. In 2014, Pollard was involved in a heated altercation with Mitchell Starc. The Lewis incident triggered outrage against Pollard on social media, but he said his conscience was clear.”What I am a big believer in is I can sit here and I can talk to you and I can tell you untruths and I can make up all sorts of stories,” he said. “But one person I can’t make up a story to is when I watch myself in the mirror. When I watch myself in the mirror, I know what my intentions were in that particular delivery, and my intention was just try to bowl the best delivery.”Pollard, however, said he had a chat with fellow Trinidadian Lewis on the matter, and that things were cordial between them. “I just told him [Lewis] ‘well played and good luck in the playoffs’. He just laughed it off. Evin Lewis… he came up after me in Trinidad to play cricket. We play cricket together. Our whole management is the same sort of management. At the end of the day, [some people may say] Kieron Pollard is jealous of Evin Lewis and things like that. That’s not in my nature. I have been the first one to congratulate somebody. I have been the first one to send him a message and always be there no matter what. And this is not going to stop me from continuing to do that.”Yes I did [talk to him after that]. We had a conversation. I wouldn’t share the exchange of the conversation but we had a couple of Whatsapp messages and it’s all cordial. No, I didn’t apologise to him.
