West Ham United should reinvest some of the money they make off of a potential Declan Rice sale this summer on Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse, Dean Jones believes.

Following their relegation to the Championship, the Saints are expected to lose their skipper this summer, and there have been a number of sides taking an interest in the free-kick specialist.

The Europa Conference League champions have recently emerged as a team interested in acquiring his services, The Evening Standard has reported, but the Saints will only consider selling Ward-Prowse for the right price.

Following their Europa Conference League win earlier this month, David Moyes' side have been busy looking at ways to strengthen their side as they prepare for a Europa League return next season.

With Rice's departure looming, they've identified a number of different potential successors for the Englishman, with L'Equipe recently reporting that Ligue 1 side Marseille are expecting the club to make a bid for former Arsenal man Matteo Guendouzi.

The Telegraph have also revealed that both Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire may potentially be on their way to West Ham, with Manchester United wanting to include the pair in a potential deal to land Rice.

With numerous potential moves in their eyesight, Ward-Prowse was recently added to the list of potential midfielders that could join the Hammers as they lose their prized asset, and while Southampton's asking price for their skipper may have initially been a problem, the money made on selling Rice could be used in a deal, according to Jones.

What has Dean Jones said about West Ham and James Ward-Prowse?

While West Ham may not initially have the funds to match Southampton's asking price for Ward-Prowse, Jones believes the money generated from selling Rice this summer should be reinvested into a deal for the Saints captain.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: "There was earlier talk that clubs might try and get him for £25 million. I mean, that just can't happen. So West Ham, if they get the chance to reinvest the Rice money that they'll eventually get, then James Ward-Prowse would be a really good spot for them to push some of that cash.”

How does James Ward-Prowse compare to West Ham United's current midfielders?

The Southampton man would immediately become West Ham's best creative midfielder, if Rice is to leave, with Ward-Prowse's average pass success rate of 85.3, higher than every other midfielder in the side.

In terms of key passes made a game, the 28-year-old's average of 1.9 a game, dwarves everyone in the Hammers side, with Aaron Cresswell's 1.4 the closest.

With the Hammers scoring from 11 set pieces last season, adding a specialist like Ward-Prowse to the squad will only boost that number even higher and the club would reap the benefits almost immediately.

No one at West Ham scored more than the nine Premier League goals that the Saints captain bagged last season, and with goals being a huge problem for the club, he'd help fix that issue.

Labeled "exceptional" by former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, Ward-Prowse would be a strong addition to the Hammers team and go a long way into replacing a club icon like Rice.

Russell Martin has made it his mission to reconnect Southampton's fanbase by making the Saints exciting to watch again after taking over from Ruben Seles as manager.

If the former Swansea City head coach is to achieve that, he could do with a helping hand from his own bosses when it comes to bringing in new recruits.

Southampton will have to offload some players to help balance the books following their relegation from the Premier League, with skipper James Ward-Prowse the most obvious example.

The future of striker Nathan Tella also remains in the balance following last season's impressive spell on loan in the Championship with Burnley, who are one of a number of sides reportedly interested in signing the striker.

But if Southampton are indeed going to cash in on Tella, they need to have a replacement – even if it is a cheaper alternative – lined up and ready to hit the ground running.

According to the Daily Mail, Martin is eager to bring Joel Piroe with him to St Mary's, but recent acrimony between Southampton and Swansea over a compensation fee for the manager could hinder negotiations.

The report suggests Piroe could be available for £12m which, while not exactly a small amount of money for a Championship team trying to readjust to a smaller budget, would mean effectively swapping the Dutchman with Tella and still having £3m or so left over.

Is Joel Piroe a better player than Nathan Tella?

First and foremost, Southampton would be signing a player that is not only Championship proven but also well known to Martin, having worked together over the past two years at Swansea.

Martin, therefore, knows exactly what Piroe is capable of in the final third. "He is so clinical with both feet, and he is a great technician," the then-Swansea boss said after a victory against Millwall last year.

"But the most important thing he has is the right mentality when he gets around the goal. He shows composure, he is calm, and he just focuses on his technique, something that all top strikers possess."

Piroe had very similar numbers to Tella last season – with the latter playing in a better side – as they scored 19 and 17 goals respectively, though the Burnley loanee did assist five goals to the former Netherlands U20 international's two.

They were also alike in terms of percentage of shots on target (44.4 for Tella and 41.4 for Piroe) and touches per 90 minutes (39.5 v 35), as per FBref, but Piroe came out on top for pass-completion rate (81.5% v 72.6%) and also the number of aerial duels won per 90 (0.55 v 0.43).

Ultimately, there is very little between the two players, with just one month separating them in terms of age. Piroe does have more longevity, though, having scored 22 goals and 19 goals in the past two Championship seasons, while also boasting experience of playing in Eredivisie with PSV.

Sanctioning the sale of Tella is a big call to make, but if Piroe is indeed available for a cheaper price, Southampton would not only be bringing in a proven striker but also helping to further ease their financial issues.

Chelsea are thought to be preparing to make an offer for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, with the Italian club holding out for €80m (£68m) to part ways with the player, according to recent reports from Italy.

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

The Blues struggled considerably in front of goal last season, scoring just 38 goals in the Premier League, the joint-fifth lowest amount in the top flight, and manager Maurcio Pochettino has now set his sights on strengthening in attacking areas of the pitch.

Having already signed Villarreal's Nicholas Jackson, in a deal worth slightly more than his £30.1m release clause in exchange for more favourable payment terms, Pochettino could now look to sign Vlahovic from Juventus.

At the end of May, it was reported that the Serbian striker is open to a move to Stamford Bridge, and the new manager's arrival could help to convince him even more. Journalist Rudy Galetti said then:

"The Blues could make a concrete move for the Serbian.

"Especially because the next manager, [Mauricio] Pochettino, considers Dušan the ideal striker for his tactical idea.The player likes the destination and reaching an agreement on personal terms wouldn't be a problem. Let's keep an eye also on Bayern Munich, who have Vlahović at the top of their list along with Harry Kane."

According to recent reports from Italy (via Sport Witness), Chelsea are now preparing to "lunge" for the Juventus star, and there is a belief that an offer could be tabled shortly.

However, there is set to be fierce competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, who are also "at the window" and ready to make an "important offer".

All three English clubs are now ready to make offers of at least €65m (£56m) for the forward, a figure that would make Juventus think, however, other reports suggest the Serie A club are keen to hold out for a fee of at least €80m (£68m).

Is Dusan Vlahovic coming to Chelsea?

At the moment, the race for the 23-year-old appears to be very much open, but given that Pochettino is now at the helm at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea could be very well-placed to secure his signature this summer.

If the Blues do come out on top, they could be getting a fantastic player, with Italian football writer Carlo Garganese hailing the Serbia international as an "absolute monster" near the start of last season.

Although the 2022/23 campaign was not his best, the Belgrade-born marksman still managed to find the back of the net ten times in 27 Serie A outings, and he has previously demonstrated he is capable of breaking the 20-goal barrier, doing so with Fiorentina in the 2020/21 season.

Signing Jackson was a good start to the window for the Blues, with the 22-year-old netting 12 La Liga goals last season, but they now have the opportunity to sign a natural goalscorer, who has proven himself over a number of years, and they should undoubtedly make their first bid for Vlahovic in the near future, making this one to watch.

Glasgow Rangers have wasted little time in attempting to bolster their playing squad throughout the summer transfer window after the failures of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Light Blues ended last season without a single trophy to show for their efforts as the Ibrox outfit finished second in the Scottish Premiership and were knocked out of every cup competition.

Michael Beale has reacted to that by snapping up a host of fresh recruits with the aim of improving the team. Kieran Dowell, Abdallah Sima, Sam Lammers, Dujon Sterling, and Jack Butland have all come through the door, while Cyriel Dessers is also set to complete a £4.5m switch from Cremonese this month.

The club's business may not be done there, though, as further ins and outs could transpire before the deadline passes later this summer.

One player who could be on their way out of Ibrox is attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi. Football Insider have reported that Italian side Lecce are working on a deal to land the Romania international, who the Gers are said to be open to cashing in on.

The outlet claimed that the ex-Genk star is a 'concrete' target for Lecce and that the Scottish giants are willing to sell the 24-year-old wizard in order to fund further additions.

Beale could ruthlessly bin the talented winger by reigniting the club's interest in Spanish magician Pablo Torre, who was a £4m transfer target for the Gers in 2021 before the gem's move to Barcelona for the same fee.

It was subsequently reported earlier this summer that the Light Blues could go back in for the 20-year-old, something that the Gers manager must now capitalise on.

Hagi missed 69 competitive matches through injury between 2022 and 2023 due to a knee problem. Upon his return he then struggled, as to be expected after such a long lay-off, with one goal and zero assists in 11 matches across all competitions last season.

Torre, on the other hand, only made 13 senior appearances for Barcelona as a squad option for Xavi last term. However, his form for Racing Santander during the previous campaign suggests that the potential is there for him to be an excellent signing.

The Spanish maestro scored ten goals and provided 11 assists in 34 outings as he showcased his ability to make a significant impact in the final third on a regular basis from a number ten position.

Torre, who was once described as "amazing" and a "magician" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, registered nine league assists during the 2021/22 season, one more than any Rangers midfielder managed in the Scottish Premiership last term.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for the Barcelona prospect to be an excellent addition to Beale's squad as his form for Racing shows that he could provide quality as a scorer and creator of goals.

His arrival would then allow the English tactician to green-light a move to Lecce for Hagi as it would provide him with cover in the attacking midfield position heading into next season.
