Leeds Must Avoid "Very Reckless" £30m Transfer Disaster

Leeds United have had a difficult Premier League season, with struggles to perform on the pitch and managerial changes aplenty, which has ultimately led to the threat of relegation to the Championship growing by the week.

The Whites have just two league fixtures remaining to retain their top-flight status as they are currently two points inside the relegation zone and recently appointed Sam Allardyce will be desperate to deliver a positive climax to a stressful season for the supporters.

Andrea Radrizzani and the powerbrokers at Elland Road will be feeling the pressure this summer after failing to put together a successful recruitment strategy to comfortably compete in the Premier League, while reckless decisions combined with their poor planning will ultimately be pinpointed should Leeds be relegated next weekend.

Indeed, the club did make an ambitious effort to replace key players like Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips in the summer, and in the attacking department, newcomers like Wilfried Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra have shown promising signs, however, the same can't be said for some of the midfield personnel acquired.

USMNT's World Cup star Tyler Adams was brought in to replace Phillips, signing a five-year deal at Elland Road last summer and becoming a revelation in the centre of the pitch, but a season-ending hamstring injury in March has left Leeds to rely on his less than impressive international teammate, Weston McKennie.

Will Leeds sign Weston McKennie permanently?

The 24-year-old Juventus midfielder was a warmly welcomed signing in the January transfer window, joining the West Yorkshire club for the rest of the season to add some depth in midfield.

However, McKennie has not had the desired impact whilst occupying a spot in the heart of the Leeds team since the turn of the year and has struggled to make the difference desperately needed to get Leeds out of trouble.

Over 17 Premier League appearances, the American liability has failed to complete the majority of his duels (57%) and offered no goal contributions so far, as well as averaging just 24.6 accurate passes, 0.6 successful dribbles and losing possession of the ball 11.2 times per game.

Leeds United midfielder Weston McKennie

Not only that, McKennie has been the recipient of a lot of criticism for his displays in a Leeds shirt, with Sky Sports commentator Joe Blitz slamming the player for his performance against Fulham last month:

“It’s such a poor pass out from McKennie which Tete intercepts. And an even worse challenge. Very reckless,” said Blitz.

“He is not quite flavour of the month with the Leeds support due to a couple of high-profile errors leading to goals. That won’t help his cause.

“A lot more was expected from him when he arrived from Juventus in January.”

It is reported that the club have an option to complete the permanent signing of McKennie for £30m this summer, but with the club in such a precarious position in the Premier League, it seems unlikely that a deal is something that would make sense at this moment in time.

With that being said, when considering the transfer fee and salary commitments alongside the midfielder's lacklustre performances, it would also make little sense to commit to a permanent deal – and instead, Radrizzani should be focusing his efforts on finding new additions who can improve the team next season.

Rahul's career-best 158 arms India with strong lead

KL Rahul struck his third Test century, a career-best 158, to thrust India into the lead against West Indies on the second day in Kingston

The Report by Alagappan Muthu31-Jul-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:25

Manjrekar: West Indies had a defensive approach overall

Flawless innings are fairly rare in Test cricket. After all, the bowler gets to dictate some of the terms too. KL Rahul listened to them patiently, respected them when they made good points but did not cede his upper hand. His career-best 158 thrust India into the lead.At the other end was Cheteshwar Pujara, who spent a full hour running away from making runs. He was 18 off 57 overnight and stayed on 18 until he faced his 92nd ball of the match. Much was made of his run-out after lunch. Facing 159 balls and being dismissed in that fashion evokes critique but there were mitigating circumstances.Runs and records awaited anyone willing to show a little application on this Sabina Park pitch. But like a grandparent doting on their favourite grandkid in the middle of a party, it did embarrass them on the odd occasion. Notably, when Pujara nudged a short delivery from Jason Holder into the leg side. He meant for it to go a lot finer, but the ball had come onto the bat slower than expected and went off it in the same way, allowing Roston Chase, who was in front of square, to cut across and throw the stumps down. Pujara, who was face-down on the ground at the non-strikers’ end, knew all his hard work had come undone by one dreadful mistake.Meanwhile, Rahul kept cruising. He had driven extremely well and by now wasn’t afraid to extend the arms and hit over the top. A good IPL – whether it makes one ready for international cricket or not – certainly does wonders to his confidence. Rahul had outshone Chris Gayle in the last season and his attacking game was on point in Kingston.West Indies, it seemed, were at the other end. There was no ambition. They did not take the new ball when it was available and instead fed a new batsman with spin. Considering that new batsman was Virat Kohli, who is susceptible to the seamers outside the off stump, it was quite baffling. With very little resistance, a ninth – out of 14 – Indian partnership crossed 50 in this series.Things changed after tea. West Indies took the new ball and put it in Shannon Gabriel’s hands. With him coming back from an ankle injury, it seemed like his team was perennially juggling chances of victory with those of him going out of commission again. Hamstring trouble for Miguel Cummins complicated matters further; the debutant was the only one to consistently aim at the stumps. Ask Pujara, who was beaten on the inside edge, outside edge and rapped on his top hand.Gabriel had had nine overs’ downtime when the new ball had become available, but the additional respite seemed to have helped since he took out Rahul and troubled Kohli too. The India captain had been perturbed by outswingers – 8 off 33 at one point – and while his guard was up for that, he couldn’t prevent an inswinger thudding into the pads. Height saved him in umpire Aleem Dar’s judgment.West Indies got Kohli and R Ashwin in the final hour of play but Ajinkya Rahane took the lead past 150.Things were better in the morning. There weren’t many runs scored – 59 in 26 overs; there weren’t many fans around – sad for a Sunday; there were no wickets but there was a contest. With clear skies welcoming the players on the second day, the likelihood of the ball seaming about had reduced. It was time to go back to camping just outside off stump for as long as it took to spot the rare, flirty Indian outside edge. Gabriel found one in his second over, but it didn’t carry to second slip.Rahul’s scariest moment came when the length was much shorter, a 144 kph delivery that seamed in at his ribs. He probably assumed the line was a lot wider and committed into a cut shot and only barely avoided being caught behind. Gabriel was the aggrieved bowler, and fit the profile too, with a look that loosely translated to “where are my *$&#^ wickets?” His first spell was five overs – the longest he has bowled on the trot in this series – and gave away only three runs. The last time India played in Jamaica a Rahul scored a century. So it was again when this Rahul came down the track and smacked the offspin of Chase into the stands at long-on. It was a shot definitive of the knock, showing how the batsman had read the threat of the ball early and how firm he was with his footwork. The only thing it didn’t make clear was how effective he had been in keeping the good ones out. A delighted fist-pump, an authoritative raise of his bat and a hug from M Vijay, who came out with drinks, were part of the celebrations.Coming into the Jamaica Test, Rahul’s top five scores in descending order read: 110, 108, 16, 7, 5. Symptoms of a good player, but a nervous starter. So even with the 75 runs he had overnight, there were questions that needed answering. West Indies had a set plan at the start – the extra pace of Gabriel allied to Holder’s wide-outside-off lines to restrict run flow and create pressure. An anxious batsman could have been led into a mistake, but Rahul was careful. And decisive too – when he went back, he went right back. When he went forward, he was more or less meeting the ball on the half-volley. Not since Mohammad Azharuddin in 1984-85 had an India batsman converted his first three fifties into hundreds.Rahul is working towards making himself undroppable. Vijay, currently injured, Kohli and Rahane are India’s best Test batsmen. Shikhar Dhawan has shown an improved judgement outside his off stump, an area he had previously struggled with. Pujara hits big hundreds, his inability to do so on Sunday hurt him. Will it hurt his chances for the next too? One of them can’t make an Indian XI with five bowlers.

Tottenham: Spurs Could Make "Statement" Signing For New Boss

Tottenham Hotspur could make a "statement" by signing Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, says talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Who could Spurs sign this summer?

The Lilywhites are currently prioritising both the search for a new manager and new sporting director, coming after the departures of both Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici.

In terms of the former, Spurs have been dealt a big blow in the last 24 hours, with former top managerial target Arne Slot confirming his intention to remain at Feyenoord.

Now, Tottenham must return to the drawing board and identify alternative Conte replacements. In terms of who they could go for, Luis Enrique, Ruben Amorim, Ange Postecoglou, Thomas Frank, Marco Silva, Brendan Rodgers and Graham Potter are all contending for the vacant post.

Meanwhile, as the summer transfer window approaches, Levy must also get to work on identifying targets, with Leicester City star James Maddison and a new goalkeeper thought to be priorities.

Tottenham could also sign additions in defence, like Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, which will come as good news for supporters considering their side have shipped more goals than any other side in the top half.

Going back to the goalkeeping department, one player who could join Spurs is Pickford, despite him signing a new deal in February.

Jordan Pickford helped keep Everton up

The England international has been linked with a move to north London since then, and talkSPORT's Agbonlahor, speaking to Football Insider, believes he'd be a "statement" signing.

“I’ve said this all season. Even before he signed the contract, it was clear that Pickford replacing Lloris is just an easy transfer for Spurs.“He’s English, he’s a top goalkeeper, he’s experienced, he can play from the back. Even though he’s signed a new contract – it means nothing.“I would still go for him. Make a statement.“Goalkeepers are a big part of where you need to go right as a football club, and Lloris is not good enough.”

Who is Jordan Pickford?

The 29-year-old has appears at three major tournaments for England at international level, playing a major role in their runs to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and Euro 2020 final.

Pickford could apparently cost around £35 million, which would be Everton's price tag if they were to sell, and it's arguable he may be worth that amount.

The former Sunderland keeper has been praised this season by Frank Lampard, who said this earlier in the campaign:

"I know how important keepers are, they can make or break you as a coach or as a team.“If we talk about expected goals and these things – then when he plays like that he wins you points, there’s no doubt.“Last week he could put his feet up, this week we rely on him and he makes great saves.”

Man United Takeover Decision Will Not Be Resolved Before Final

Manchester United's takeover situation is still ongoing, and it will not be resolved before they appear in the FA Cup final, journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed.

What's the latest on Man United's ownership situation?

There is still a lack of clarity over what Man United's current owners, the Glazers, will do moving forward, following multiple bids for ownership from Sir Jim Ratcliffe's consortium and a Qatar-backed group led by Sheikh Jassim Hamad Bin Al Thani.

Ratcliffe's bid will likely see the Glazers keep some of their shares in the club, whilst Jassim's latest bid, which falls short of the asking price, is for a full takeover.

The situation has dragged on for months, and manager Erik ten Hag will have been hoping for a resolution before the end of the season. However, speaking to GiveMeSport, Jacobs revealed that there is to be no answer ahead of United's final match, the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

“It's still fluid. There are still less formal talks taking place behind the scenes," he stated.

"Unfortunately for all parties, nothing has moved, and it may not move until after the FA Cup Final.”

What could happen next for Man United?

Man United's current focus will be on the cup final, which could play a crucial role in stopping their local rivals from completing a treble, a feat only achieved by United in English football.

The lack of progress on a deal may cause frustration, but with no resolution in sight, the Glazers may be waiting until the season ends before any announcement, given the potential for protests at the cup final if an unfavourable decision is reached.

Man Utd protest banner

There have been protests from sections of the United fanbase calling for a full sale of the club, rather than a takeover which will see the Glazers remain in any capacity.

The American family have been heavily criticised since taking over United in 2005, having seen a large buildup of debt and a steady decline in on-field performance since. The Red Devils have not won a league title in ten years, and have had to watch their biggest rivals in City and Liverpool consistently compete for major honours since.

A resolution will be necessary soon to allow Ten Hag to operate in the transfer market, following a promising first season of progress under the Dutchman. United secured a third-placed finish and won the Carabao Cup, their first piece of silverware in five years, and will be hoping to challenge for the title next season.

Qalandars strip Azhar Ali of captaincy

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars have removed Pakistan ODI captain Azhar Ali from the captaincy, but retained him in the side. Azhar is likely to be succeeded by Brendon McCullum, whom Qalandars are set to pick in the draft to be held in Dubai on October 19.Qalandars will get the first pick in every round of the draft for the second edition of the PSL as the team finished at the bottom in the inaugural edition earlier this year. Given this advantage, Qalandars have decided to snap McCullum from the top Platinum category and name him captain. The former New Zealand captain will also act as a mentor for the team.”We are bringing in McCullum, whose credibility and performances as captain are tremendous,” said Aqib Javed, the franchise’s director of cricket operations. “We are signing him not only as captain but as a batting mentor as well. We are announcing it earlier because we want to take the captain on board so that we can make a better combination than the one we had last year. We are really happy to have him on board and the level of commitment he has shown so far is really great.”Qalandars were arguably the most explosive batting side in the competition last year, boasting Chris Gayle, Umar Akmal, Cameron Deport and Dwayne Bravo, but only managed to win two out of eight games. Azhar’s captaincy position was called into question in the immediate aftermath of the tournament, but the official announcement came only on September 22, weeks before the second PSL draft. The franchise had already revamped their working executive, bringing in former fast bowler Aqib as director cricket operations and Muddasir Nazar as consultant. In last year’s draft, Azhar was relegated from the Diamond category to the Gold category, and then from Gold to Silver, before Qalandars eventually picked him up. Commenting on Azhar losing the captaincy, Aqib said that he had leadership qualities but added that McCullum was a “much better choice”.”Azhar is a great human being and does have the leadership qualities, but you can’t compare him with Brendon at all,” he said. “There is no comparison between the two players. Last year, unfortunately, we didn’t do well and now we want to make a winning combination. With Brendon on board, we want to start planning much earlier to make a difference. This won’t hamper Azhar’s national captaincy at all, but Brendon was a much better choice.”Azhar’s ODI captaincy has also come under increased scrutiny after a tough 17 months during which Pakistan slipped to ninth place in the rankings with 86 points, their lowest ever rating since the ranking system was introduced in 2001. In the eight series with Azhar at the helm, Pakistan have beaten only Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Ireland. After Pakistan’s 4-1 defeat to England in August-September, PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan asked Azhar to consider relinquishing the captaincy, but Azhar decided not to step down. With Shaharyar currently in London, recuperating after a heart surgery, the status quo has been maintained for Pakistan’s forthcoming ODI series against West Indies in the UAE.

Younis puts illness behind with vintage ton

He was forced to spend two months away from cricket due to dengue fever, but he came back to the game in style with his 33rd Test hundred

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2016A stroll through Younis Khan’s recent statistics in Test cricket suggested nothing had changed. He had amassed a double-hundred in his last match. Now he had made a century. He had been scratchy early on, but was sublime by the end and Pakistan once again were in a position to dictate terms.Except between his 218 against England in London and 127 against West Indies in Abu Dhabi, there were two months’ time away from the game. In September, he had contracted dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease that leaves the body weak and fatigued. “I lost six-seven kilograms,” he said at the post-match press conference at Sheikh Zayed Stadium. “But now I’m working on my weight and my fitness, so I will be 100% soon.”Younis was not in shape to play the series opener in Dubai, which had also been Pakistan 400th Test, not to mention their first day-night Test. And coming into the second Test, he had to contend with a lack of match practice.”I was a little worried because after the Oval Test [I had not played anything],” Younis said. “I wanted to play a couple of domestic games, which is always good for you. No matter how much you practice in the nets, you need game time.”His illness did not allow that luxury. “But I got to play three or four matches for my club on cement wickets,” Younis said. “They weren’t tough conditions, but I’m glad I played. Karachi was very hot at the time, and I struggled in the first match. But playing those three-four matches really helped me.”Having come to the crease in the 14th over, Younis had looked set to bat out the day’s play when he slog swept an innocuous looking offbreak from part-timer Kraigg Brathwaite straight into the hands of deep midwicket. Before the next batsman could take guard, the umpires called for stumps citing bad light and Pakistan went in at 304 for 4.After making his 33rd Test hundred, Younis credited his doctors, saying they “helped me recover quickly because usually, you don’t have any energy for one month after dengue. I think they took care of me very well, and that’s why I’m here right now.”During the course of a 175-run stand, Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq became the owners of Pakistan’s most prolific partnership in Test cricket. When asked what the secret to their success was, he said: “I don’t know… there’s no secret. Maybe we’re the seniors, we have the responsibility to carry the batting line-up, although we have very nice and fantastic youngsters in the team, the responsibility is always there for us. So whenever we play together, we know that [getting] 200-300 is important for our team.”Everybody knows that we like to take our time, and then suddenly [we go] after the spinners and sometimes against fast bowlers as well. So I think there’s no secret, it’s all about mental preparations.”

Chelsea Keen On Signing £184k-a-week Attacker

Chelsea are one of three top clubs interested in signing Inter striker Lautaro Martinez this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

Is Martinez leaving Inter this summer?

The £184,000-a-week attacker has enjoyed a memorable season, winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and appearing in six of their matches in the competition.

At club level, Martinez has been more of a key man, however, helping Inter reach the Champions League final and scoring 27 goals in all competitions, prior to the meeting in Istanbul.

But the 25-year-old moves on to pastures new at the end of the season, though only a huge offer would likely be able to prise him away, with his current deal not expiring until 2026.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Martinez and a new update has now emerged regarding his future, suggesting that their interest isn't going away.

Inter Milan'sLautaroMartinezcelebrates scoring their second goal

Could Chelsea snap up Martinez?

According to 90min, the Blues are battling with both Real Madrid and Manchester United for the signing of the Argentinian in the summer transfer window:

"Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United have all registered an interest in Inter striker Lautaro Martinez, who is expected to leave Italy after Saturday's Champions League final, 90min understands.

"Chelsea and United, who have been following Martinez's career for years now, have registered their interest in a summer deal but they will have to fend off interest from Real Madrid if they are to bring him to the Premier League."

Martinez could be a brilliant signing by Chelsea at a time when it is essential that they sign an elite striker before the beginning of next season. Lionel Messi has hailed him as "spectacular" in the past, which speaks volumes about the quality he possesses, while a tally of 102 goals in 237 appearances outlines his pedigree in front of goal.

At 25, there is every chance that his best years could still be ahead of him, and assuming Mauricio Pochettino rates him as highly, he could be considered an ideal figure to lead the line at Stamford Bridge, linking effectively with those around him.

Chelsea's complete lack of European football could be a problem, though, which could make Manchester United and Real Madrid more attractive moves, but the money is available to spend in west London – so they should at least test the waters with a big bid.
