Blackburn learn compensation fee to appoint 44 y/o as Eustace’s replacement

Blackburn Rovers are now aware of how much it will cost to take a League One manager out of his current job and bring him to Ewood Park, according to a reliable reporter.

It was announced in the middle of last week that John Eustace had left his role as Blackburn boss to become the new Derby County manager. It was a decision that came as a surprise to many, but since his departure, the Lancashire side have won back-to-back games, beating West Brom and Plymouth Argyle by 2-0 scorelines.

Interim boss David Lowe has done an excellent job at keeping Blackburn’s play-off hopes alive, but it is likely that a new manager will be brought into the club as they look to build on Eustace’s success.

There have already been a few names linked to the vacancy at Ewood Park, with Carlos Carvalhal, Aitor Karanka, Raphael Wicky, and George Boateng all being mentioned as possible candidates.

Meanwhile, former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has also been added to the Championship side’s shortlist, as he’s been out of work for a couple of months since leaving Molineux.

As well as O’Neil, Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens has been added to the managerial shortlist after continuing to impress in the third tier.

Blackburn learn compensation fee to appoint 44 y/o

Now, according to reporter Alan Nixon, as relayed by Football League World, Blackburn have learned that it will cost them £250,000 to get Wellens out of Leyton Orient and into the hot seat at Ewood Park.

The 44-year-old, who likes his sides to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, joined Orient in March 2022 and has since taken charge of 153 games at the club, guiding them to promotion in his first full season, and they are now in a fight for a play-off spot in League One.

It is unclear how interested Blackburn are in appointing Wellens as their next manager, but the fee certainly suggests Orient are in no mood to hand him over on the cheap as they seek a spot in the Championship.

Nixon added that Rovers are stepping up their search for a new manager this week, with them set to speak to candidates as they try to get an appointment in place for their game against Swansea City next Saturday.

After 30 games in League One this season, Wellens has guided Orient to 15 wins and 5 draws. The east London side held their own against Manchester City last week in the FA Cup and are serious contenders for promotion this season, evidence that makes it no surprise that Wellens is of interest to teams in a league above.

Departing right-back Alexander-Arnold faced a chorus of boos from the Anfield crowd after he was brought on during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal. The England defender replaced Conor Bradley in the 67th minute and fans gave him a mixed at best reception, while "there's only one Conor Bradley" chants also echoed through the stadium.

Alexander-Arnold finally confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season earlier this week, provoking a fierce discourse among the club's fans. While many can accept the 26-year-old's desire to try something new at Real Madrid, others feel the hometown icon has betrayed his local community and that view was clear to see and hear from some supporters during Sunday's game.

DID YOU KNOW?

Alexander-Arnold didn't make much of an impact during what should be his penultimate fixture at Anfield as a Liverpool player and even played Mikel Merino onside as the Spaniard brought Arsenal back onto level terms.

Chelsea struck gold selling Blues star who Lampard thought was "top-level"

Chelsea’s dealings in the transfer market over the last couple of years have caught the eye, to say the least, investing more money over the last three years than any side in the Premier League.

Todd Boehly is largely responsible for that, taking over the club in May 2022 and splashing a lorry-load of cash on new players to push the club back towards the summit of the table.

The American spent over £100m on two different players during his time at Stamford Bridge, bringing Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernández to West London to bolster the midfield department.

The total spend since the 51-year-old’s arrival is now over £1.2b, with other clubs starting to ask questions about the Blues’ capabilities to meet the division’s PSR rules.

They’ve largely been helped by numerous high-profile departures, offloading multiple players no longer in the plans, preventing Enzo Maresca’s side from any financial implications.

Chelsea’s big-money sales in the Boehly era

German international Kai Havertz joined Chelsea with huge expectations after his big-money move to Stamford Bridge from Bayer Leverkusen back in the summer of 2020.

Whilst his spell in West London was overall a difficult one, he would score the winning goal in the Champions League final during his debut campaign at the club – forever cementing himself in the club’s history.

Kai Havertz celebrates after scoring for Chelsea in the Premier League against Everton.

The Blues received a hefty fee for his services in the summer of 2023, joining rivals Arsenal in a mammoth £65m move – a deal that made him the second-most expensive departure in their history.

Conor Gallagher was another high-profile and big-money sale, leaving his boyhood club last summer in a £33m deal to join Atlético Madrid, with João Félix moving in the opposite direction.

The Englishman amassed just under 100 appearances at the Bridge, with numerous supporters disappointed at his exit after featuring in all but one league outing last campaign.

However, the club certainly made the right call in moving one player on, especially after he’s failed to live up to expectations since his transfer – with the Blues cashing in on him whilst his stock is at its highest.

The player who Chelsea made the right call selling

Chelsea’s academy has produced endless talent throughout the years, many of whom have thrived in the senior side after making the jump from the youth levels.

Chelsea captain Reece James

You only have to look as far as the current side in West London, with Reece James currently the first-team captain, rising through the ranks and becoming a key member of the side when fit.

Another player who managed to follow in the same vein was midfielder Mason Mount, who spent 18 years as a player with his boyhood side before departing.

The now 26-year-old endured two successful loan spells at Vitesse and Derby County – linking up with former Blues star Frank Lampard at Pride Park, scoring 11 times in the Championship, which catapulted him into the first-team picture.

Lampard was appointed manager of Chelsea back in the summer of 2019, utilising youth within the first team, which saw Mount receive the opportunity to star for the club he supported as a boy.

mason-mount-chelsea-arsenal-transfer-martin-odegaard

He would make a total of 195 appearances, racking up 33 goals and 32 assists, with former boss Lampard dubbing him a “top-level” talent as a result of his importance in the final third.

However, he would join Manchester United for £60m in the summer of 2023, in a move that has halted his progress, featuring just 33 times in the last 18 months, with injuries playing havoc in recent times.

Even when he has featured at Old Trafford, he’s only notched one goal and one assist across all competitions, struggling to match the levels he produced at the Bridge.

As a result, his value has plummeted, with the 26-year-old now only valued at £26m by Transfermarkt, a near 60% decrease on the fee he cost the Red Devils.

Given his rapid decline away from West London, the club certainly made the right call in selling him in 2023, allowing for the investment in the likes of Cole Palmer as a result.

There’s no denying that Mount is a quality player on his day, but he’s been a shadow of his former self over the last few years, needing a huge revival to return to the levels he’s previously showcased.

The class-less Clasico: Barcelona and Real Madrid are seriously sore losers who can't help blaming referees and conspiracy theories for defeats

The Blaugrana and Los Blancos boast some of the game's greatest players – but also some of its most entitled moaners

As it stands, Sunday's Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid will go ahead as planned. But who knows what might happen between now and the scheduled kick-off at 16:15 local time?

Madrid could take issue with the identity of the match referee. After all, Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez has taken charge of 35 of their Liga games in the past and they've lost nine of them – the kind of scary statistic that suggests either incompetence or corruption (at least in the mind of Madridistas). After all, when Madrid lose, it's never their fault. The referee is always to blame, which is why they're presently leading a campaign to overhaul the entire system of officiating in Spain.

It's a thankless task – quite literally. Indeed, Madrid are copping quite a lot of flak for raging against a machine that many of their rivals would argue has benefited Los Blancos more than any other club in Spain.

As the Liga leaders, Barcelona have been particularly incensed by their great rivals' constant complaints, which are seen as a rather obvious attempt to discredit the Catalans' seemingly imminent championship success. Barca would also argue that they don't just have to deal with biased refereeing in Spain, as they feel that they're being shafted in Europe, too – as supposedly underlined by Tuesday's Champions League loss at San Siro.

There is still hope that Sunday's post-match discourse will be dominated by debates over the greatness of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Pedri, Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappe or Jude Bellingham, but while the game at Montjuic really could be one for the purists, it feels far more likely that it will prove yet another Clasico for the conspiracy theorists…

AFPAnother pathetic protest?

In the extremely unlikely event that anyone has already forgotten, there was very real doubt over whether Madrid would even turn up for the previous Clasico, on April 26. Madrid refused to fulfil their pre-match media duties and there were reports in the Spanish press that they were actually considering boycotting the Copa del Rey final itself.

It seemed perfectly plausible, of course. Madrid have plenty of previous when it comes to throwing hissy fits. They refused to turn up for last year's Ballon d'Or awards ceremony when they learned that Vinicius wasn't going to win – arguably the most pathetic, petty, unjustified and unsporting protest the football world has ever seen.

Madrid insisted that they never entertained the idea of pulling out of the final – but that was only "out of respect to all those fans who have travelled to Seville and those that are already in the Andalucian capital". Why were they so upset then? Because of the alleged "hostility and animosity" shown towards the club by the "referees assigned to the final".

Advertisement@rfef / X'Target on a colleague's head'

It has to be acknowledged that match referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea and VAR Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes should never have been allowed to speak to the media before a game. Such press conferences have been introduced by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in the interests of greater transparency, but the officials' comments were always going to cause controversy, given the pre-existing toxicity surrounding the Copa del Rey Clasico.

However, as both men were at pains to point out, Madrid – and, in particular, their poisonous in-house TV channel that pores over refereeing decisions on a daily basis – had played pivotal roles in the creation of said toxicity and they understandably welcomed the opportunity to speak out.

"The consequences of talking about robberies and using bad words, that frustration you create among fans, is something that the boys and girls who pick up a whistle to do a kids' game end up paying for," Gonzalez Fuertes told reporters. "That is the consequence of putting a target on a colleague’s head."

De Burgos Bengoetxea spoke even more passionately – and movingly – about the devastating effects of the constant criticism of referees.

"When a child goes to school and people tell him his father is a thief it's messed up," the official said, struggling to contain his emotions. "All I can do is educate my son so that he knows that his father is honourable, show him what refereeing is, and for everyone to reflect on where we want to go; I would like you all to know, it is very hard."

Depressingly, that plea for greater understanding has been ignored – and not just by Madrid.

Getty Images Sport'We can't lose respect for referees…'

Barca boss Hansi Flick came out strongly in support of referees while Madrid were going into meltdown ahead of the Copa final. "What's happening isn't right," he said. "We can't lose respect for referees. This is football, and it's our responsibility to protect everyone: players, coaches, and referees. On the pitch, there are emotions, but after the match, we must move on."

Flick struggled to follow his own advice at San Siro on Tuesday, though. "We think that the result is unfair because of some refereeing decisions, I have to say it," Flick said after a 4-3 loss to Inter that saw Barcelona eliminated from the Champions League semi-finals 7-6 on aggregate.

"I don't want to talk too much about the referee," Flick added, before continuing to talk about the referee. "But every decision that was 50-50 ended up being in their favour; that's what makes me sad."

What was truly sad, though, was that Flick felt compelled to confront Szymon Marciniak after the full-time whistle, as it only encouraged further whining from his players in their respective post-match interviews.

Getty Images Sport'UEFA should look into it'

Ronaldo Araujo said Marciniak "influenced" the game, Eric Garcia brought up past grievances from games involving the Pole, while Pedri even went so far as to call for an investigation into Marciniak's handling of the second leg.

"It's not the first time that this has happened to us with this referee, so UEFA should look into it, as there are things that I don't understand and they are complicated to explain: all of the 50-50s went for them," the midfielder said, echoing his coach.

It was all nonsense, of course. Marciniak had actually missed Pau Cubarsi's foul on Lautaro Martinez during the first half and the penalty was only awarded because of the VAR, Dennis Higler, who was also responsible for overruling Marciniak's decision to give Barca a second-half spot-kick as the replays proved that Henrikh Mkhitaryan's foul on Lamine Yamal had actually taken place outside the area.

Barca's claim that Denzel Dumfries had fouled Gerard Martin before Inter's injury-time equaliser was also laughable – as was Inigo Martinez's insistence that he hadn't intentionally spat at Francesco Acerbi after Hakan Calhanoglou's successful penalty attempt. Indeed, for all Barca's b*tching and moaning, the biggest let-off of the night was their centre-back avoiding a straight red card for a disgusting and cowardly reaction to taunting.

Cummins, Head, Starc lead Australia to victory inside two days

They claimed victory in six sessions as 34 wickets fell in fewer than 145 overs in the second-shortest Test in Australia

Firdose Moonda18-Dec-2022It only lasted two days. But it was action-packed, wicket-filled and run-rare. And in the end, Australia have the series lead. They claimed victory in six sessions as 34 wickets fell in fewer than 145 overs in the second-shortest Test in Australia. The frequency of dismissals means the unavoidable talking point will be the pitch, which was so green it was indiscernible from the outfield on day one, but it would be unfair to pin the result on the surface alone. Australia’s bowlers, especially in the latter part of the first and throughout the second innings, were accurate and incisive against a South African batting line-up. In 2022, South Africa have been dismissed for under 200 in Tests eight times, their most innings totals lower than 200 in a calendar year. In this Test match, their totals of 152 and 99 with top scores of 64 from Kyle Verreynne and 36* by Khaya Zondo were not enough.Australia also battled on the strip, which showed signs of inconsistent bounce abetted by the divots and lost four wickets in the chase, all to Kagiso Rabada. He is now the leading Test wicket-taker of the year and it will be small consolation for falling behind in a key contest. South Africa must win at least one Test to stay in contention for the World Test Championship final, while Australia lead the points table.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe damage was done in the middle session, where South Africa were reduced to 66 for 7, level on scores after conceding an equivalent lead in the morning, but without much batting to come. Zondo, playing in only his third Test, gave a reasonable account of his ability especially against the short ball but only had support from Temba Bavuma, with whom he shared a 42-run fourth-wicket stand.By the time the pair came together, South Africa were 5 for 3 and has lost Dean Elgar, lbw to Pat Cummins, Rassie van der Dussen to a Mitchell Starc beauty that seamed in at pace and snuck through the bat-pad gap to give Starc his 300th Test wicket and Sarel Erwee, caught in the gully for the second time in the match.Bavuma and Zondo batted together for 99 balls and scored 42 runs between them, many of them nervy. They were beaten at least a dozen times but there were also some signs of form, such as when Bavuma leaned into a cover drive off Cummins and then Scott Boland and when Zondo swivel-pulled Cummins behind square. They were 19 runs short of erasing the deficit when a Nathan Lyon delivery stayed a touch low and struck Bavuma on the pad. He was given out and reviewed, with replays showing it was going on to clip leg stump.Mitchell Starc becomes the 7th Australian to take 300 Test wickets•Getty ImagesIn the next over, Boland found Kyle Verreynne’s outside edge with a delivery that moved away slightly and Steven Smith completed the catch at second slip. Two balls after that, Boland bowled Marco Jansen with an away-seamer. On the stroke of the scheduled tea break, Starc bagged another when Keshav Maharaj nicked off. South Africa were still two runs behind. They levelled scored by the tea break, but they did not appear to be building much of a lead when Cummins removed Rabada and Anrich Nortje in successive balls. Zondo farmed the strike for much of the time Lungi Ngidi was with him but Ngidi also got a couple away and South Africa set Australia 34 to win.Earlier, Australia took the lead in the first five deliveries as Rabada completed his overnight over. Cameron Green tucked into a half-volley and drove Rabada down the ground to put the hosts ahead. Green repeated the shot two more times in Rabada’s next two overs to force him out of the attack early, but that did not work to Australia’s advantage.Marco Jansen replaced Rabada and struck twice in his first over to clip Australia’s brisk start. Green received another half-volley, off Jansen’s second ball, and he attempted a booming drive. He only managed a thick edge that flew to Keshav Maharaj at third slip. Maharaj parried the ball up and Sarel Erwee, from first slip, ran behind him to take the catch. Two balls later, Travis Head was given out caught down the leg side. Head reviewed and though there was nothing on hotspot, snicko revealed a spike that confirmed he had hit both glove and shirt. His 96-ball innings finished on 92, and ultimately, proved a significant difference between the two sides.Australia’s lead was only 30 runs at that stage, and it was up to Alex Carey and the lower order to push that past 50. Starc lofted Jansen over mid-off and pulled Nortje through mid-wicket and put on 31 with Carey for the eighth wicket. Carey ran well in his short innings, with no boundaries in his 30-ball 22, but 12 singles, two threes and a four, which he and Starc ran. They took Australia’s lead to over 60 before Ngidi was introduced after the first drinks’ break and broke through. Starc hit Ngidi’s first ball in the air through mid-on for four and then drove the last ball aerially as well. Ngidi got down low in his follow-through and completed a good return catch.A pumped-up Rabada then bounced Cummins out, with three short balls in a row. The first popped up to point and Cummins was given out but reviewed successfully. Replays showed the ball had hit the arm guard. Cummins nearly edged the second and then pulled the third to mid-wicket, where Nortje was waiting. In this next over, Rabada had Lyon caught at mid-on to finish with four wickets in the innings.

Tottenham make contact to sign 11-goal striker alongside another sensation

Looking to add to the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, Tottenham Hotspur have now reportedly made contact in pursuit of signing another two rising stars for Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham transfer news

Spurs’ struggles have been clear for all to see all season. Whilst they’ve suffered injury after injury to leave Postecoglou with no choice but to field makeshift backlines and blunt attacking trios, there’s an argument to be made that the Australian hasn’t helped himself at times.

Remaining stubborn over his tactics, the Lilywhites have been exposed over and over again, including in a recent 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

Those in North London shouldn’t be too quick to put all of the blame on their manager, however, given how little squad depth he has been handed over the last year or so. It’s a problem that simply must be solved when the summer transfer window swings open and one which could once again be helped by the arrival of future stars.

Tottenham plotting move to sign "wonderful" ex-Real Madrid gem scouts love

He’s a rising star…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 28, 2025

According to The Boot Room, Tottenham have now made contact in the race to sign both Christos Mouzakitis and Charlampos Kostoulas in a double swoop from Olympiacos this summer.

Facing competition from North London rivals Arsenal as well as Nottingham Forest and Chelsea, Spurs should be desperate to get one over on their Premier League counterparts and land two impressive talents in the process.

Christos Mouzakitis for Olympiacos.

Starting with Mouzakitis, the Lilywhites would be getting an 18-year-old midfielder who’s already an established regular starter for what is a massive club in Greece. He’s made 16 Super League 1 appearances for Olympiacos this season, scoring once and assisting once for the senior team.

Meanwhile, by adding Kostoulas, Spurs would be signing a striker who already knows exactly where the back of the net is. At just 17 years old, the Olympiacos star has scored 11 goals in all competitions – including six league goals for the first-team.

"Robust" Kostoulas has key versatility

Having already taken Greek football by storm, 17-year-old Kostoulas could find himself attempting to steal similar headlines in the Premier League sooner rather than later. Given that Spurs has been the land of opportunity amid their squad depth problems in the last year or so too, a move to North London would be no bad thing for the young forward.

Crucially, if those opportunities to impress were to arrive at Spurs, Kostoulas would also offer Postecoglou some key versatility in return. As highlighted by analyst Ben Mattinson when praising the teenager’s “robust” ball-carrying ability, Kostoulas has developed into an attacking midfielder in recent months, but is still capable of moving into the lone striker role.

With plenty of competition for both his and Mouzakitis’ signature in the coming months, the impressive young striker looks set to have quite the decision to make this summer.

Renshaw ready for Ashwin test if opportunity comes in India

The left hander believes that lbw is the biggest danger facing the offspinner

AAP25-Jan-20232:54

Will some red-ball game time in Ranji Trophy help India ahead of Australia Tests?

If Matt Renshaw gets a call-up to Australia’s Test side on the upcoming tour of India, he says he will be as prepared as ever to take on spin maestro R Ashwin. In 2021 Ashwin became the first bowler in history to take 200 wickets against left-handed batters. The 26-year-old Renshaw will tour with fellow top-six left-handers David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Travis Head. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey is also a lefty, so the challenges ahead are immense in the four-Test series that starts next month.Related

Renshaw would play in the middle order if selected for the current side. When Australia toured India in 2017, he played all but one innings of the four Tests as an opener. Ashwin got him out just once, in the first Test at Pune, but not before he had top-scored with 68.”Ashwin is difficult to face. He is a smart bowler with a lot of variations and he uses them very well, but you do get used to him once you’ve faced him for a while,” Renshaw told AAP. “I think the big challenge from Ashwin and any offspinner in spinning conditions to a left-hander is the lbw threat.”Obviously everyone thinks about the one that turns and gets you caught at slip, but the big one is the lbw when it doesn’t spin. You just have to be ready for that one.Matt Renshaw was part of the Australia side last time they toured India•Associated Press”I think two years batting at No. 5 helped me with facing spin. I know my game a lot better now and I am a lot more comfortable in different situations. We have a strong squad and it is going to be hard to push my way in, but I know that I will be ready if I do get a chance.”Renshaw is still part of the Brisbane Heat’s BBL campaign and has been preparing for India by having the spinners in his team, such as Mitch Swepson, Matt Kuhnemann and even Marnus Labuschagne, bowl the SG ball at him that is used in Test cricket in India.”The SG ball is a bit different, so we are just trying to prepare as well as we can during this BBL schedule if we get a window to hit red balls,” Renshaw said. “It is a lot different conditions in India, so we are trying to replicate them as much as we can.”The plan was if [the Heat] got knocked out we’d do some prep with the [Australian] team in Sydney, but we just kept winning and are in the finals now.
